【Report of the Award】Hirogi Yokochi is selected as a winner of the Student Research Competition at the 2021 International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies

Hirogi Yokochi (TAC-MI student)was selected as a winner of the Student Research Competition at the 2021 International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies held from December, 2021.

Congress The 2021 International Chemical Congress of Pacific Basin Societies (PAC CHEM) was held for six days from December 16 to 21, 2021. The conference is sponsored jointly by the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC), the Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ), the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry (NZIC), the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI), the Korean Chemical Society (KCS), and the Chinese Chemical Society (CCS). In the Student Research Competition held during the conference, participants who watched the two-minute pre-recorded presentation videos joined (participated in) the voting to select 40 winners from 1,400 applicants

Background of participation / About research

Under the guidance of Assistant Prof. Daisuke Aoki and Prof. Hideyuki Otsuka of the Department of Chemical Science and Engineering, I studied the control of the terminal structure of polymers using macrocycles with dynamic nature. I participated in the Pacifichem2021 because it was a large-scale conference where researchers in dynamic covalent chemistry and materials chemistry, which were closely related to my research, gathered from all over the world. In our laboratory, a method has been developed to convert a desired molecular skeleton into a cyclic topology by simple experimental manipulations. In this study, we show that it is possible to control primary structures of polymers such as the terminal structure and molecular weight by using macrocycles obtained by this method. The research result was published in Polymer Chemistry on April 14, 2020, and was selected as a Front Cover.

I’m very honored to be selected for the Student Research Competition Winner in Pacifichem2021! In addition to the oral presentation, we were required to make a video introducing our research within two minutes, and I thought about how I could convey my research result in an easy-to-understand way in two minutes. Then, I decided to make some animation, and what came in handy was the video editing skills I had developed through my outreach activities. I have been posting videos on YouTube for about a year now to appeal my research activities to high school students, and I think it is important to take on various challenges and learn various skills outside of one’s specialty in the doctoral program. At the Tokyo Tech Academy for Convergence of Materials and Informatics (TAC-MI), I am also learning information-related skills that are not my specialty, and I believe that this kind of experience and knowledge will ultimately lead to the deepening of my own specialty. Encouraged by this experience and the award, I would like to devote myself to research even more in the future.
